What is Mixed Martial Arts (MMA)?

Mixed Martial Arts, commonly known as MMA, is a full-contact combat sport that involves two competitors trying to dominate each other using three main tactics – striking, submission holds, and control. The rules permit the fighters to use a range of martial arts techniques such as punches, kicks, joint locks, chokes, takedowns, and throws. A win can be achieved through knock-out, submission (where a fighter submits by tapping the mat or opponent) referee, fight doctor, or a competitor’s cornerman. MMA also encompasses any modern martial arts style that includes ground fighting, stand-up striking, and takedowns in their training.
